"Red on Black - The Story of the South African Poster Movement" documents the history and use of graphics and posters in the struggle against apartheid. South African artists and activists produced thousands of posters, banners and murals that recorded, interpreted and engaged with the struggle for freedom. "Red on Black" tells the story of these artists, their intentions, ideas, hopes and the harsh repression under which these people worked. Perhaps more than any other medium, the South African poster movement speaks powerfully about those times, capturing in single images the atmosphere and emotion, pain and passion of events that both shattered and built our nation. "Red on Black" is an important tool in the on-going debate about our national identity. Judy Seidman is a poster-maker and producer of struggle materials. She worked as a member of Medu Art Ensemble in Gaborone in the early 1980s and is now Curator of the Posterbook Collective of the South African History Archive, which produced the book "Images of Defiance - South African Resistance Posters of the 1980s in 1990".This book will be an effective resource for libraries and teachers of Human and Social Sciences, History, Life Sciences.
